This Satirical Thriller
The filmmaker's bold commentary addresses the oppressive nature of women's appearance and the perceived horrors of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers an inspired performance playing Elisabeth, an aging actress reduced to hosting a workout series on the small screen. Forced aside thanks to her deceitful superior her manager Harvey, she undergoes a mysterious and gruesome treatment known as "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to a progressively toxic connection between them. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

This Supernatural Story
Soderbergh tests his directorial skills with this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their recent residence, the lens – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The daughter appears conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema
This Self-Referential Film
Nicolas Cage fully commits to his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He acts as an egotistical film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to attend a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. This Saturday, evening, Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
The director's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Set in the late 70s in Denver, a series of disappearances has left the local kids frightened. Once Finney is taken by the kidnapper and locked up in a basement, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
This Dramatic Portrait
In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for greed in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple commence capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, bad makeup and bad faith, though the lead actress succeeds to show the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4
Black Bag
The current week's additional entry from the filmmaker is a espionage tale as tight as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission with uncovering a traitor inside the organization from a group of five – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars are masters of understated style, leading to a delightful psychological game of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. This Friday, various showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
